At the Energynomics conference “Stepping stones for the BESS technologies development” our colleague Mihaela Coroiu highlighted several key directions for the future of Romania’s energy landscape:
✅ The interest in short-term energy storage batteries is growing rapidly – the technology is becoming more accessible, and the production from intermittent sources (solar & wind) is putting pressure on the National Energy System (SEN).
✅ Storage is essential for integrating renewables and balancing the SEN.
✅ Imbalances in the SEN are becoming a stimulus for investments – standalone battery business models are emerging.
✅ We have a developing legislative framework and opportunities for non-repayable funding, but challenges remain regarding energy costs for consumers.
Local microgrids – producing and storing energy close to consumption points can reduce energy transfer losses and lead to more affordable energy costs.
We have projects (solar, wind, storage) with issued ATRs, but many are neither started nor have secured funding. These block network capacity, creating theoretical congestion that hinders real development – including storage projects, which are key to efficiently integrating clean energy.
It’s time for Romania to combine investment ambition with a coherent strategy and clear regulations.
