Digitalization and Energy Efficiency Conference

The development of the renewable energy sector will continue in the coming years, and the storage part will become more and more important, but of the 10,000 MW that have connection permits (ATR), at most 20% will be realized, also due to speculative investors, said Daniel Dumitrașcu, Director of Sustainability and Energy Efficiency at EnergoBit Control Systems, at the conference “Digitalization and Energy Efficiency – Cluj-Napoca”, organized by Energynomics.

“The storage part will be increasingly important in the coming years, as will hydrogen. Storage would be the most approachable solution; it is another option to balance energy consumption and production. Our company is involved in more than 10,000 MW of renewable energy projects. A huge and highly volatile figure. Many of such projects evolve to ATR stage or are traded, but only 10–20% end up materializing. Some market players treat them not as production units but as a way to speculate on the opportunities of the moment. We should avoid speculation,” Daniel said.

According to EnergoBit Control Systems, renewable generation units will provide 49% or more of total electricity consumption by 2030. While this is “a very good thing”, it will create problems, including a possible collapse of the national power system, if the right regulations and technical measures are not being adopted.

EnergoBit Control Systems has been involved in the first energy storage projects in the country, and the need for such units will grow. An advantage is the financial availability secured through EU and PNRR funds.

“Through the PNRR, 240 MW in storage units and 480 MWh of storage capacity are expected to be installed by 2025,” our colleague added.

At the same time, the company is also involved in the definition of rural energy communities, an approach that aims to ensure energy supply to villages in Romania.
